Schnitzer Steel is a global company specializing in collection, processing and sale of recycled steel. Schnitzer Northeast is located on the banks of the Charles River across the city line of Boston. The facility processes all metal products including vehicles, appliances, rail cars, industrial machinery, and manufacturing scrap for resale as scrap metal for new metal production.
Brattan Industries was contracted for a major recycling upgrade project. At the time, the country’s largest metal shredder, at 9000hp, was installed along with a major expansion to the maintenance building and product weigh station. The project spanned three (3) years and work was performed in a very rigid environment.
The large 9000hp shredder involved complex MCC controls and 35kv high voltage power service. The shredder was atop an elevated structural steel support conveyor system and capable of converting large vehicles into small shreds in seconds.
